A pedestrian was killed Saturday in a crash on Farrington Highway in Nanakuli during severe weather, police said.
The pedestrian was in the roadway with no marked crosswalk near him when he was struck by a town-bound vehicle being driven by a 50-year-old Waianae man, police said.
The pedestrian died at the scene.
Police closed part of Farrington Highway near Kahe Power plant to investigate the incident, which happened at about 3:45 a.m.
Oahu has recorded 16 traffic fatalities this year compared to nine at this time last year.
Damage from fatal fire totals $380,000
The Honolulu Fire Department has pegged total damages from Wednesday’s fatal fire in Makiki at $380,000.
Alvin K. Asakura, 49, was trapped by the fire and died in Unit 402 of the 10-story apartment building known as the Oahuan Tower, at 1710 Makiki St. His body was found by firefighters inside a bedroom.
The three-alarm fire caused $200,000 in damage to Unit 402, $100,000 in damage to the fifth-floor unit directly above, and $80,000 in damage to other apartments from fire, heat, smoke or water, according to Fire Department spokesman Capt. Scot Seguirant.
The first alarm was sounded at 11:23 a.m. The fire was extinguished by 12:37 p.m.
Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
Police arrest suspect in domestic abuse case
A 26-year-old man was arrested early Saturday on suspicion of trying to strangle a 23-year-old woman in Waipahu on Thursday night.
According to a police report, the suspect physically abused the victim by restricting her airway at about 10 p.m. Thursday.
He was arrested at 3 a.m. Saturday on suspicion of abuse of a family or household member and was in police custody.
