Nine is the number this week and next for the University of Hawaii beach volleyball team.
The third-ranked Rainbow Wahine (14-3), winners of nine straight, are scheduled to play nine matches over the next two weeks on two coasts. It begins Saturday in Columbia, S.C., with the SandBows opening against UNC Wilmington (8-5) at the Gamecock Challenge
Hawaii also will face host and eighth-ranked South Carolina (12-2), with duals against Florida Gulf Coast (4-3) and UAB (5-2) on Sunday.
The SandBows remain on the road when traveling to Sacramento for the Big West Challenge, March 30-31. Hawaii, the two-time defending conference champion, faces all five Big West foes: Cal State Bakersfield (2-4) and Cal State Northridge (9-1) on Friday, and No. 5 Long Beach State (10-1), No. 7 Cal Poly (12-2) and Sac State (0-8) on Saturday.
The 49ers jumped three spots in Monday’s AVCA national poll after upsetting then-No. 4 Florida State 4-1 at the LBSU Sand Courts last Thursday. The Seminoles handed Hawaii its lone loss of the East Meets West Challenge in Manhattan Beach, Calif., two weeks ago.
The Matadors are off to their best start in program history. CSUN was to have its biggest tests of the season on Thursday, but duals with No. 1 Pepperdine and No. 15 Loyola Marymount were postponed because of inclement weather.
Hawaii, the two-time defending Big West champion, has the two-time reigning conference pairs team of the week in sophomore Morgan Martin and freshman Lea Monkhouse. The duo went 6-0, dropping just one set, when helping the SandBows to the title of the Outrigger Resorts Invitational last weekend, a performance that included two victories over three-time defending national champion USC.
