Marquis ID Systems Vice President of Sales & Marketing Steve Purdy speaks during a press conference today at Honolulu Hale. MIDS, the vendor who provides the Hawaii driver license card issuance system to Honolulu, along with city officials, explained their ongoing efforts to retrieve documents that were scanned at driver licensing centers throughout the state between Feb. 25 and Sept. 15, 2017, but that have been found to be unrecoverable due to a multiple hard disk crash on Sept. 15.

The city said today that personal documents of 66,500 individuals scanned at driver licensing centers last year have been lost and the city will have to collect the documents again.

The city said the documents are “unrecoverable due to a multiple hard disk crash” of a contractor’s computer server Sept. 15.

Marquis ID Systems is the vendor providing the Hawaii driver license card issuance system to the City and County of Honolulu, which manages driver licensing statewide under a state contract.

Personal information submitted by applicants between Feb. 25, 2017 and Sept. 15, 2017 was stored but cannot be retrieved due to the server crash, city and Marquis officials said.

Marquis and city officials said there was no security or data breach, and that encrypted storage media is still secured and in the possession of the contractor.

The city plans to notify the affected individuals to let them know that their information was lost and that they will need to resubmit documents the next time they renew or replace their license.
