Hawaii third baseman Nicole Lopez hit a two-run home run and the Rainbow Wahine softball team held off Cleveland State’s comeback in a 5-4 win on Saturday in the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Classic.
Lopez gave the Rainbow Wahine (16-12) the lead in the bottom of the first with her fifth homer of the season in support of freshman Emily Klee, who made her first career start. The Wahine led 5-1 after four innings before the Vikings (9-16) closed to within a run in the sixth.
Senior Dana Thomsen relieved Klee (2-0) in the sixth and got the final two outs of the inning. Cleveland State put the tying run on second with one out in the seventh, but Thomsen got a flyout and strikeout.
Hilo softball splits with No. 3 Dixie State
Cyanne Fernandez pitched 52⁄3 quality innings and Isabelle Mejia recorded the final four outs as the host Hawaii Hilo softball team beat No. 3 Dixie State 4-2 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.
Fernandez allowed six hits and two runs (one earned). Mejia allowed a hit and struck out three.
In the second game, Jessica Gonzalez hit a three-run homer in the seventh in Dixie State’s 6-3 victory. Bailey Gaspar had two hits and scored two runs for the Vulcans (15-8, 6-4 PacWest).
The Trailblazers moved to 22-2, 8-2.
2 UH swimmers earn All-America honors
University of Hawaii diver Madison Sthamann earned All-America honors with a sixth-place finish in platform diving on Saturday at the NCAA women’s swimming and diving championships in Columbus, Ohio.
Sthamann jumped 10 spots with her final dive of the preliminaries to qualify for the A finals and posted a score of 265.45 in her final collegiate event.
Sthamann delivered her performance a day after senior Franziska Weidner earned All-America status with a seventh-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke in a UH record 59.12 seconds.
UH sophomore Phoebe Hines finished 12th in the 1,650 freestyle on Saturday with a time of 15:58.72 to earn All-America honorable mention.
The Rainbow Wahine finished with 29.5 points to place 28th out of 44 schools in the team standings.
UH water polo falls to No. 3 USC
Paige Hauschild scored three goals to lead No. 3 Southern California to a 9-5 win over the fifth-ranked University of Hawaii water polo team on Saturday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
The Trojans (13-1) led 4-2 at halftime and scored three unanswered goals to take control. Chloe Barr and Elyse Lemay-Lavoie scored two goals each for the Rainbow Wahine (16-4), who lost to USC for the second time this season.
UH men’s golfers finish 12th
The University of Hawaii men’s golf team finished at 40-over-par 892 to wind up 12th at the Grand Canyon Invitational on Saturday in Phoenix.
Missouri won the 15-team event with an 850.
Hawaii’s Justin Arcano and Nick Nelson finished tied for 49th at 9-over 222.
Water polo coach Cole to speak at QB Club
University of Hawaii water polo coach Maureen “Mo” Cole will be the featured speaker at Monday’s meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club at the Maple Garden restaurant.
Cole is in her seventh season as Rainbow Wahine coach. Hawaii is 16-4 and ranked No. 5 this season.
The luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m. with the program to start at noon. The cost is $16. The meeting is open to the general public.
