High surf, snow and clouds in isles’ forecast

CANADA-FRANCE-HAWAII TELESCOPE

Snow covered the ground around the CFH Telescope this morning atop Mauna Kea.

A winter weather advisory warning of rain and snow on the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa has been extended to 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Snow up to one inch is expected above 13,000 feet at the Hawaii island summits due to an upper trough that will funnel deep, layered clouds across the island over the next few days, according to weather officials. Travel to the summits is not advised Wednesday morning due to hazardous conditions including the mix of rain and snow and strong, southwest winds.

Meanwhile, a high surf advisory for north and east shores from Niihau to Hawaii island remains in effect until 6 p.m. today.

Forecasters say to expect cloudy skies and wet weather across much of the Aloha state through the rest of the work week, with possible, heavy rainfall Wednesday through Thursday.
