A 50-year-old motorcyclist died after crashing into an automobile Saturday night along Kapiolani Boulevard in Moiliili, police said.
The man was trying to overtake a vehicle in the Diamond Head-bound lanes at about 11 p.m. when he sideswiped another vehicle turning right into the Marco Polo condominium, police said.
The motorcyclist was ejected and hit a curb. He was not wearing a helmet.
That marked the 13th traffic fatality on Oahu so far this year, compared with seven at this time last year. The total grew with another motorcycle fatality earlier Saturday in Maili.
Brush fire closes Kamehameha Highway
Wind whipped up a brush fire that closed Kamehameha Highway for several hours Sunday afternoon near Whitmore Village.
The fire was reported at about 11:25 a.m. near Kamananui and Kaukonahua roads, said Honolulu Fire Capt. Scot Seguirant.
Police said Kamehameha Highway was closed from Whitmore Village to Helemano Plantation because of the fire. It was reopened at about 3:30 p.m.
Nineteen HFD units staffed with 47 personnel responded to the blaze, which was contained by 1:17 p.m. and extinguished by 3:36 p.m., Seguirant said.
Several abandoned vehicles and debris within homeless camps in the area were damaged from the fire, which charred about 50 acres. No injuries were reported for this incident.
