Police are looking for a man who may have been involved in the death of a sea turtle at White Plains Beach.

Honolulu police got a call at 4:09 p.m. from the Department of Land and Natural Resources regarding a dead turtle, possibly shot at White Plains Beach, and were issuing descriptions of a suspect.

DLNR spokeswoman Deborah Ward said a lifeguard at the beach notified DLNR’s Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) about a dead sea turtle.

DOCARE officers understood that military police were looking for a man who had a fishing pole in one hand and a handgun in the other, Ward said, but added DOCARE was only peripherally involved.

The agency contacted the the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s turtle response team, which found a dead turtle, but the animal did not appear to have been shot, Ward said.
