Jaeda Cabunoc wasn’t fully satisfied, but a four-hit shutout would have to do.
The junior right-hander struck out five and walked two as No. 10 Roosevelt blanked Kailua 14-0 in a game curtailed to five innings due to the 10-run rule. A crowd of about 100 assembled on a cloudy, cool afternoon at Tiger Softball Stadium for the Oahu Interscholastic Association opener for both teams.
“Jaeda had some moments where she strayed with her pitches, but she came back, which is good,” Roosevelt coach Kris Fujii-Dias said.
Kylie Kawamura, Tiani Sniffen and Hoku Ching smacked home runs for Roosevelt, a team that many coaches consider a dark horse contender for the OIA D-I title.
“We knew what we have, but honestly, I haven’t kept up with other teams,” Fujii-Dias said.
Cabunoc was instrumental as her team’s ace last season. Her mix of pitches was enough to overcome a less than stellar performance — by Roosevelt’s standards.
“My wind-ups, sometimes I cut it short instead of going full circle,” Cabunoc said. “Every game, you have struggles, but my change-up and inside fastball were working.”
The Rough Riders reached Kailua starter Salina Serikawa for 10 runs on seven hits, sending 13 batters to the plate in the first inning. Maya Nakamura led off with a single and Kawamura bombed a homer to left.
Sniffen walked and Cabunoc doubled before Mari Foster singled to center, scoring Sniffen for a 3-0 lead.
Mika Emoto sent a grounder to third, but third baseman Kassy Kealoha-Machado opted to make a tag attempt on the baserunner, Cabunoc, and missed. With the bases loaded, Kani Pitoy singled to right, bringing Cabunoc home for a four-run lead.
After Jada-Lee Takara lined out to short and Ching was hit by a pitch, forcing Foster home from third base.
Nakamura returned to the plate and reached on a fielder’s choice forceout at home plate. Kawamura then singled to center, bringing two runs home. Sniffen then blasted a three-run homer to right to open the lead to 10-0.
In the bottom of the third, Sniffen reached on an infield single and scored on back-to-back wild pitches for an 11-run Rough Riders lead.
In the fourth, Palena Gomes tripled and scored on Deia DeLara-Lono’s single to left. Ching followed with a line-drive homer to center, expanding the lead to 14 runs.
