More rains statewide, wind advisory for the Big Island

In addition to wet and unstable weather this coming weekend, the National Weather Service has issued a high wind advisory for the Big Island, in effect until 6 p.m. Saturday.

East to southeast winds of 15 to 30 miles per hour, with localized gusts up to 50 miles per hour are expected to affect the Kau district and the saddle, but also portions of the windward side. Strong winds can bring down small tree branches, cause roof damage and produce power outages.

Meanwhile, forecasters say isolated, heavy showers and thunderstorms could pop up anywhere in the isles this weekend. Southeast winds will focus rainfall over windward and southeast slopes. An upper trough over Kauai, meanwhile, may bring a second round of heavy showers and thunderstorms, expected to hit Oahu by Sunday afternoon.

A flash flood warning remains in effect for all of the Hawaiian isles through this afternoon, with the east and southeast slopes at greatest risk. Since the ground is still saturated from last Sunday’s deluge, areas that recently received excessive rainfall will be more susceptible to flash flooding.

The winter storm warning for Big Island summits above 12,000 feet, with six to 12 inches of snow bringing difficult travel conditions, also remains in effect until 6 p.m. today.
