HFD rescues three hikers in two separate incidents

Honolulu firefighters rescued two female hikers who spent the night on the Tripler Trail this morning as well as a female hiker on the Kaau Crater Loop Trail this afternoon.

At about 6 p.m. Wednesday, two visiting females were hiking the Tripler trail when they became tired and concerned for their welfare. The Honolulu Fire Department’s helicopter Air1 located the hikers but suspended rescue operations due to hazardous conditions. The hikers, who reported no injuries at that time, were instructed to take shelter for the night.

This morning, three firefighters were able to hike in to meet the hikers at about 8 a.m. One reported being hit in the head by a falling rock, but that she continued hiking about five hours after her injury. Both were escorted to a landing zone, airlifted to Tripler and transferred to the Federal Fire Department’s ambulance unit at 9:23 a.m.

At 12:33 p.m. today, firefighters responded to a call of a visiting female hiker in distress on the Kaau Crater Loop trail. It was reported that she was hiking the trail alone, when she became disoriented and lost. Firefighters hiked the trail by foot and found her at 1:13 p.m., and escorted her off the trail by 2:12 p.m. The hiker reported no injuries.
