Hawaii sophomore Callee Heen hit two home runs and drove in six runs in the Rainbow Wahine softball team’s 8-1 win over UNLV on Monday to close the Marucci Desert Classic in Las Vegas.
Heen opened the scoring with a two-run single in the top of the first, led off the third with a homer to center and added a three-run blast to right in the fourth. Heen and outfielders Britnee Rossi and Jennifer Iseri each contributed three hits to UH’s 15-hit attack.
UH right-hander Dana Thomsen (2-1) scattered 10 hits, struck out three and walked one in a complete-game victory and the Wahine (5-2) closed the five-day tournament with their fifth straight win.
UNLV third baseman and Mililani graduate Jadelyn Yadao-Valdez went 2-for-3 for the Rebels (8-3).
UH’s season-opening road trip continues to Los Angeles, where the Wahine face Loyola Marymount in a doubleheader on Thursday.
Rainbow Warriors stay at No. 3
For a fifth consecutive week the Hawaii men’s volleyball team is ranked No. 3 in the AVCA Division I-II Coaches Top 15.
The Rainbow Warriors (8-1) open the inaugural Big West season against No. 5 UC Irvine (11-3) on Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Anteaters dropped a spot in Monday’s poll after falling at home to Pepperdine last Wednesday in four sets.
Long Beach State (13-0) remained at No. 1, receiving all 25 first-place votes. The 49ers defeated UCLA in four Saturday, a loss that didn’t hurt the Bruins (14-2), who stayed at No. 2.
Two-time defending NCAA champion Ohio State (11-2) moved up a spot to No. 4.
SandBows No. 5 in preseason poll
Hawaii opens its season ranked No. 5 in the AVCA Collegiate Beach Volleyball preseason poll released on Monday.

The Women of Troy will compete in the Outrigger Resorts Hawaii Invitational at Queen’s Beach on March 17-18 along with No. 10 Grand Canyon and unranked Nebraska, the reigning NCAA indoor volleyball champion.
