Washington woman dies after North Shore snorkeling incident

A Washington state woman who had been snorkeling at Sharks Cove died Friday after her relatives found her unresponsive in the water, authorities said.

Police said the 46-year-old woman died at the Queen’s Medical Center at about 9 p.m.

Emergency Services Department spokeswoman Shayne Enright said in an email that the woman was snorkeling at the North Shore attraction when her relatives found her unconscious at about 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Beachgoers started CPR until lifeguards arrived and took over. Emergency Medical Services personnel also treated the woman and took her to a hospital in critical condition.

Enright said there are no lifeguards stationed at Sharks Cove and urged the public to swim at lifeguarded beaches.

The woman was wearing a full face mask in surf about 2 feet high.
