Woman identified in fatal Kona crash

Hawaii island police report that an unidentified man and 54-year-old Kailua-Kona woman died from their injuries in a two-vehicle crash Friday evening near the 84-mile marker of the Mamalahoa Highway Route 11 in South Kona.

The woman has been identified as Roxane Cho, but the name of the male is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.

On Friday, police responded to an 8:13 p.m. call, and determined that a 2013 Nissan sedan had been traveling south when it was involved in a collision with the unidentified man and Cho, who were within the southbound lane of the highway. Both the man and Cho sustained critical injuries from the collision and were taken to Kona Community Hospital.

Cho was pronounced dead at 10:01 p.m. Friday, and the unidentified man was pronounced dead at 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

The operator of the Nissan sedan, a 55-year-old woman and her female passenger, both of Oceanview, were uninjured in the collision. Police do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to contact Officer Kimo Keliipaakaua at 326-4646 ext. 229 or make an anonymous call to CrimeStoppers at 961-8300.

Police say the deaths are the first and second traffic fatality of the year compared to four at the same time last year.
