Waterspouts possible around Oahu, Kauai

The National Weather Service issued a warning today about the possibility of waterspouts near windward Kauai and parts of Oahu.

The warning took effect about noon was set to expire at 1:30 p.m. for the Kauai Channel, Kauai Windward Waters, Oahu Leeward Waters, and Oahu Windward Waters.

At noon, radar indicated strong thunderstorms capable of producing waterspouts moving northeast at about 11 mph, in the Kauai Channel north of Oahu, the weather service said.

Waterspouts can easily overturn boats, and small craft could be damaged in the sudden change in wind and wave heights, the weather service said. Gusts of 40 mph or greater were possible.

The weather service warned mariners to immediately move to safe harbor.
