With a state berth wrapped up, No. 2 Punahou can go all out for another ILH title.
The Buffanblu got a game-high 19 points and three 3-pointers from Zayne Chong and 10 points each from Maninoa Tufono and Kaulana Makaula in a 72-50 win over No. 4 Kamehameha on Saturday at Damien’s gym.
Punahou advanced to the final of the ILH tournament and locked down the league’s second state playoff berth when No. 1 Maryknoll defeated No. 7 ‘Iolani 71-55 on Saturday evening at McKinley.
The Spartans (10-1) and Buffanblu (9-2) finished in the top two in the regular season and are the last two remaining in the tournament. Punahou, which held the state’s No. 1 ranking for most of the season before losing 49-48 to Maryknoll on Jan. 18, needs to beat Maryknoll on Monday and again Tuesday to win a third league championship in four years.
“I think every year a team will hit some adversity,” Punahou coach Darren Matsuda said. “We were playing really well and then you hit that and I think it brought us back to Earth a little bit. It made us refocus on what makes us good and that’s playing together on both ends.”
Punahou could have forced a playoff against the Spartans for the first-round title, but lost to ‘Iolani 63-58 in its season finale.
Saturday was the Buffanblu’s first game since that loss.
Punahou had beaten Kamehameha (7-5) by seven and 17 points in the regular season. It outscored the Warriors 39-24 in the second half after leading by seven at the break.
“We had some brutal film sessions (after the ‘Iolani loss) and really went back to the drawing board,” Matsuda said. “I think too that everyone steps it up in the playoffs. Everybody just thrives under the competition when it’s win or go home.”
Kobe Young had 15 points and Kamren Victorino-Kato added 10 for Kamehameha.
With a win on Monday, Maryknoll can win its first ILH league title since 2013.
