Top-seeded Maryknoll, which has lost to Konawaena in the finals of the past two state tournaments, gets one more shot against the Wildcats tonight after the Spartans dispatched young Waiakea 75-40 on Friday.
Maryknoll beat Konawaena in preseason 56-37, but that doesn’t matter to coach Chico Furtado.
“Now it’s when it matters. We’ll come out and do our best,” Furtado said.
Maryknoll, riding the experience of 11 seniors, opened with a 9-0 lead. Kelsie Imai’s layup to open the second quarter brought Waiakea within 11-5, but that was as close as the BIIF runners-up got.
Maryknoll led 31-9 at halftime, but the Spartans never lost intensity in ending the Cinderella dreams of the Warriors, who are the only team in the tournament with an all-underclassman roster.
“We don’t want to ever be passive,” Furtado said. “Waiakea is very young. I was very surprised when I paid attention to what they have. They remind me of us two, three years ago. That team’s going to be here in the while. We’ll have to deal with them in the future, for sure, but tonight was our night.”
Isabella Cravens, a 6-foot-1 senior, powered ILH champion Maryknoll with 15 points and 11 rebounds in just 17 minutes. She shot 7-for-8 from the field. Kamalu Kamakawiwo‘ole led the Spartans with 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists, four steals and three blocks in 19 minutes.
Moe Notoa added 12 points, six rebounds and three assists. The Spartans dominated the glass 48-27. The Warriors committed 25 turnovers and shot 23 percent from the field.
Zaelynn Lui-Cabinatan scored 11 points to lead Waiakea.
