Companies, nonprofits and individuals now have a clear path toward sponsoring improvements, animal exhibits or other programs at the Honolulu Zoo under a new initiative announced Friday by the city.
The program was designed to let private partners provide support for the zoo, which was denied reaccreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in March 2016. The association cited lack of an adequate and dedicated source of funding as its key reason for denying reaccreditation.
Oahu voters in 2016 approved dedicating a 0.5 percent share of property tax revenues annually to zoo use.
The public is asked to submit Request for Sponsorship applications if they want to support enhancement and improvement of zoo facilities, animal exhibits, public areas, animal enrichment, general visitor experience and equipment. In return, sponsors will receive some form of recognition.
The deadline to apply is March 1. For more information and to submit an application, go to honolulu.gov/pur/sponsorship.html.
The sponsorship program was initiated by a bill introduced by Councilwoman Kymberly Pine, who said the city needs to explore partnerships with the private sector when possible to reduce the burden on taxpayers.
