Logan Scott, a Kaiser High School graduate who is battling cancer, is spreading awareness about the disease through music.
The Hawaii Kai singer and composer, who was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer at age 20 in November, will play with his band SRVYVD, pronounced “survived,” at a fundraiser to raise awareness about the disease, which affects more than 6,000 Hawaii residents each year.
“It was shocking because he didn’t have any symptoms,” Kelly Scott said of his son, who turned 21 on New Year’s Eve. “He works out a lot and he’s in good shape. He’s really into hiking in Hawaii. He always eats healthy. He wanted to do these concerts to help spread awareness of cancer. Cancer can be an issue even for young people that seem healthy.”
His passion for music began at a young age, studying piano at the age of 4 and writing and recording his first song for the band Pipeline at 10 years old. In the following years he recorded with jazz and R&B singer
Ginai and New York’s Salvador Poe (aka Paul DiBartolo), formerly lead guitarist in the band Spread Eagle.
Scott, who is undergoing chemotherapy, will perform at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, along with his music partner and best friend, Max Louie, at Blue Note Hawaii in Waikiki. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.
The eclectic R&B band features electronic beats, sounds and effects of an electronic piano. The duo will sing and rap onstage with veteran trumpet player Mike Lewis and Ginai.
After attending the University of Hawaii, Scott plans to transfer to the University of Colorado, Denver, in the fall. He is also preparing to release a solo album with original music this year. Tickets are $15 to $35, with a $10 food and beverage minimum.
