High surf advisory in effect for most islands

A high surf advisory has been issued for the north and west shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai, and for the north-facing shores of Maui, in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The National Weather Service said the current northwest swell is subsiding, but will maintain elevated surf along exposed north and west shores through this afternoon. Surf will drop below the advisory threshold tonight, but a new northwest swell will boost surf back above the advisory threshold by Wednesday morning.

Expect surf of 10 to 15 feet through this afternoon along the north shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai and Maui, subsiding to 9 to 12 feet tonight, then building to 15 to 20 feet on Wednesday. Surf on the west shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai will reach 8 to 12 feet this afternoon, lowering slightly tonight, then rising to 10 to 15 feet on Wednesday.

Impacts are moderate, but expect strong breaking waves, shore break and strong currents, making swimming dangerous. Beachgoers are advised to heed all advice by Ocean Safety officials.
