PACIFIC TSUNAMI CENTER

A powerful earthquake struck off Peru’s coast early Sunday, prompting a U.S. agency to issue a tsunami threat message for parts of the country and neighboring Chile.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has reported a 7.3 magnitude earthquake near the coast of Central Peru at 11:19 p.m. HST Saturday.

A tsunami threat exists for parts of the Pacific located closer to the earthquake. However, based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.

Tsunami waves reaching 0.3 to 1 meters above the tide level are possible for some coasts of Peru. Tsunami waves are forecast to be less than 0.3 meters above the tide level for the coasts of Chile.
