UH volleyball team beats Barton
Sophomore hitter Austin Matautia put down a team-high 13 kills and No. 4 Hawaii remained undefeated with a 25-16, 20-25, 25-17, 25-22 victory over Barton in the Off the Block’s Grow the Game volleyball tournament today in Nashville, Tenn.
Junior hitter Brett Rosenmeier added 12 kills and four aces for the Rainbow Warriors (4-0). Angelos Mandilaris led the Bulldogs (0-2) with 15 kills and Aleksa Brkovic 12.
Barton, the defending Conference Carolinas champion, was poised to force a Set 5 when taking a 21-18 lead in Set 4. Hawaii closed it out on a 7-1 run, including scoring six straight to end it, the last five with Matautia serving.
Trailing 22-20, the Warriors used two kills by junior hitter Stijn van Tilburg, two Barton hitting errors and two blocks to pull it out in 95 minutes. Sophomore middle Patrick Gasman and junior setter Joe Worsley stuffed Brkovic on aloha ball.
Hawaii outblocked Barton 13-8 with Gasman in on six and sophomore middle Dalton Sobrig five. Set 2 was the first set the Warriors have dropped all season.
Hawaii concludes the tournament on Sunday with matches against No. 13 Grand Canyon (5-0) (7:30 a.m. HST) and Lincoln Memorial (0-1) (10:30 a.m.)
