The Hawaii women’s basketball team found time for some soul searching and personal reflection coming off of a disappointing road trip.
Then the Rainbow Wahine found time for extra cardio during team practice, a means to attempt game-like shots on tired legs.
UH (7-8, 0-2) knows it must cash in on its wide-open looks if it is to be a player in this year’s Big West race. It missed many of those opportunities in road losses to Cal State Fullerton and UC Davis, but gets a chance to right things at home against UC Irvine (8-7, 0-1) tonight.
“There’s always something we can fix,” forward Kenna Woodfolk said. “We’re going to make mistakes in a game. It’s not about the mistakes we make, it’s about how we bounce back and how we just stay together when we make our mistakes. It’s easy to cheer when we’re up … but we have to stay together when we’re not up, and when we’re in a hole.”

UH is coming off its most lopsided loss — 76-52 at Davis on Saturday — in a Big West game since rejoining the conference in women’s basketball in 2012.
Coach Laura Beeman still liked elements of her team’s performance better in that one than a 12-point loss at Fullerton to begin BWC play.
“The frustrating part is, even when we executed, we had wide-open shots, (and) we’re missing them,” Beeman said. “We have to figure out why we’re not hitting shots. I think part of it is, I’ve got to do a better job of simulating game situations in practice so that we’re playing in practice at a much better pace, so that the games aren’t a shock. That’s on me. I’ve got to get this team in a much better place with execution, and we’ll figure it out.”
Stat-tracking at Davis showed UH missed 16 of its 27 layup attempts. Leading scorer Sarah Toeaina (14.2 ppg) was held to nine points, while Woodfolk scored a team-high 11.
“The coaches have emphasized going off two feet, because a lot of the chippies that we missed were off-balanced, going off one foot out of control,” Woodfolk said. “So, we’ve been working this week on going off of two feet and being under control.”
UH has never started a Big West season 0-3, going back to its original membership in what was then called the PCAA in 1984-85.
It also has won eight straight over Irvine and leads the series 30-8 overall, but this is a more potent UCI team than usual.
The Anteaters spread their attack; no player averages double-figure scoring. But a handful of quick guards attack the basket frequently and pick up defensively.
“We’re going to see pressure all night long, probably a 2-2-1,” Beeman said. “They’re very, very good. They’ve improved greatly over the last two years.”
UH had its two injured post players recently make their season debuts. Mackenzie Clinch Hoycard, a 6-3 freshman, is available, but 6-3 sophomore Taylor Donohue is day-to-day after appearing in two games in Las Vegas.
The Wahine continue play at home Saturday against struggling Long Beach State (2-14, 0-2), the defending Big West tournament champion.
