Big Isle police capture prison escapees

Hawaii island police captured today two inmates who escaped from a state prison Friday night, a Department of Public Safety spokeswoman said.

Matthew Alani, 25, and Lorrin Nakapalau, 39, were discovered missing during a headcount at Kulani Correctional Facility at about 8:35 p.m., the spokeswoman said. Their escape was under investigation.

At about 12:20 p.m. today, DPS said Big Island police had the two men in custody. The Hawaii Police Department said they were located on North Kulani Road.

Alani was sent to prison for a robbery conviction, and Nakapalau for an escape conviction.

Alani is described as 5 feet 6 inches tall, about 220 pounds, with brown hair and eyes and a tattoo across his neck.

Nakapalau is 6 feet tall, 160 pounds, with brown hair and eyes.

Kulani is a work-camp facility for inmates nearing the end of their sentences.
