Hilo clerk shoved into rack in liquor robbery

Hawaii island police arrested a 22-year-old Hilo man in connection with a robbery this morning at a downtown business in Hilo.

At 3:59 a.m., police were called to a store in the 500 block of Kilauea Avenue after a man took two bottles of liquor from the shelf, then shoved an employee into a sales rack and ran out of the business. The suspect was seen getting into the passenger seat of a dark-colored SUV that fled Puna-bound on Kilauea.

The victim, a 61-year-old man, was not seriously injured.

Police arrested Makali’i Kahumoku-Jose near the Mooheau Bus Terminal in Hilo at 9 a.m. and took him to the cellblock. He was later charged with one count of second-degree robbery and third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug. He remained in police custody this afternoon in lieu of $26,000 bail and was scheduled to make his initial appearance Tuesday afternoon in South Hilo District Court.
