Mid-Pacific girls basketball coach Sherice Ajifu has resigned from her position, according to Mid-Pacific athletic director Scott Wagner.
In a statement to the Star-Advertiser, Wagner wrote, “we are grateful for her years of service to the school, and her efforts in bringing the team to its state championship win last season. The team is currently moving forward in anticipation of another great season of girls basketball at Mid-Pacific.”
Lisa Russell, who is currently a faculty member at Mid-Pacific, will serve as interim coach.
Ajifu, who guided the Owls to their first Division II state basketball crown, is the second coach on Oahu to step down recently.
Roosevelt athletic director John Chung confirmed Monday that Chad Kaihe has stepped down as head girls basketball coach for the Rough Riders.
Kaihe was in his second season as head coach. The former Nanakuli junior varsity coach was hired after longtime coach Hinano Higa stepped down before the 2016-17 season.
Two weeks ago, Roosevelt played in the Sacred Hearts Invitational preseason tournament. After the team’s last game, a 48-29 win over Waipahu, a tournament official said that Kaihe was assaulted by a player’s father in the parking lot. HPD was called to the scene. Chung said he was not aware of any charges pressed.
Chung, a longtime boys basketball coach at Roosevelt, is the interim girls coach and will likely remain the coach for the remainder of the season.
