Former U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka is fighting a leg infection at The Queen’s Medical Center.
The 93-year-old politician was admitted to the hospital a couple of weeks ago after a small infection on his leg worsened, his wife, Millie Akaka, said Wednesday.
Akaka, who represented Hawaii in the U.S. House and then the Senate from 1976 to 2013, is now on the mend, she said, though he may have to undergo physical therapy to help him with walking.
Holiday sale offers goods made by inmates
Hawaii Correctional Industries is holding its annual Holiday Showcase Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at its showroom at 801 Dillingham Blvd.
The showroom is on the second floor above Max’s of Manila restaurant and will feature one-of-a-kind products made by Hawaii inmates, including handcrafted wooden bowls, clocks, furniture and quilts. Fresh produce from the inmate farm will also be on sale.
In 2016, the state Legislature signed a bill allowing inmate-made products and services to be sold on the open market and to the public.

Man arrested for alleged stabbing during argument
Kauai police arrested a 28-year-old Kapaa man early Wednesday for allegedly stabbing a 39-year-old Kapaa man during an argument.
Police responded to a call at 10:15 p.m. Tuesday of an assault on Kuhio Highway near Kauwila Street. They arrived to find the older man had been stabbed in the stomach.
He was taken to Wilcox Hospital for a severe laceration that was determined not to be life-threatening, police said in a news release.
Police arrested Patrick Janicke at the scene on suspicion of second-degree assault. They charged him, and set his bail at $5,000.

Disagreement sends Honokaa man, 29, to the hospital
Police arrested a 29-year-old Honokaa man Wednesday morning for allegedly stabbing a 34-year-old man on Tuesday night in Hamakua.
Police said the victim reported that while the two were sitting in his car on Kamakawiwoole Church Road, the suspect attacked him after a disagreement.
The victim was taken by ambulance to the North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he remains in guarded condition, police said.
Police arrested the younger man at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday on suspicion of second-degree assault in Waimea.
