Stephen Brown appears in Honolulu District Court today.

A couple charged with the murder of a part-time housekeeper on the North Shore appeared in Honolulu District Court this morning.

Stephen Brown, 23, appeared before Judge Paula Devens with green hair, no shoes and surrounded by a dozen sheriff’s deputies. Devens set Brown’s bail at $1 million before he was remanded to jail.

Brown’s preliminary hearing was set for Wednesday.

Hailey Dandurand, 20, appeared shortly afterward in court barefoot, and dressed in a light blue prison gown. Her bail was set at $500,000 with a preliminary hearing on the day as Brown’s.

Neither of the suspects gave a statement.

Brown and his girlfriend, Dandurand, have been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Telma Boinville, 51, in Pupukea on Thursday.

Brown also has been charged with first-degree burglary, kidnapping, and two outstanding warrants. Dandurand has also been charged with first-degree burglary, kidnapping and unauthorized possession of confidential personal information.

They were arrested Thursday night near the Mililani Walmart.

Boinville’s body was found inside a vacation rental in Pupukea. Her 8-year-old daughter was found bound with her mouth duct-taped upstairs.

Community members later spotted Boinville’s Toyota Tacoma truck at the Mililani Walmart after the child’s uncle, Brian Emery, posted an emotional video on social media seeking the public’s help in finding the suspects.

Boinville was born in Brazil and worked as a substitute teacher at Sunset Elementary School and also cleaned houses to supplement her income.

Court records show Brown was charged with abuse of a family or household member in June after he punched his then-girlfriend multiple times.

Court records indicate the abuse case was dismissed without prejudice in August.
