The Hawaii basketball team overcame a slow start and went 11 deep to defeat Division II counterpart Hawaii Hilo.
Manoa remained undefeated in 10 all-time official games against Hilo with the 82-64 victory in front of a Saturday night crowd of 2,387 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
UH (6-2) committed only 10 turnovers, sank a season-high 10 3-pointers and improved to 2-0 on its seven-game December homestand, with Utah Valley (6-4) up next on Dec. 17.
Four Rainbow Warriors scored in double figures: Mike Thomas (13), Drew Buggs (13), Sheriff Drammeh (12) and Jack Purchase (10). All but one of the eight other ’Bows to play scored.
UH and UHH began Saturday’s game a combined 0-for-14 from the field.
Drammeh ended that with a 3 — more than four minutes into the game — and a floater.
Hilo kept right on missing. It bricked its first 10 attempts before finally scoring on a 3 by Trey Ingram (team-high 14 points) with 13:03 left in the half. UHH went on to shoot 27.6 percent in the period, while UH worked its way back up to 50 percent by halftime on a number of easy looks.
Johnson flipped a pass behind his head for a Thomas one-hand jam, the highlight of the half. UH used a 16-2 run to blow it open and carried a 38-19 lead at intermission.
Buggs opened the second half with a 3, then went coast to coast for a steal and breakaway layup to open the second half. He exited seconds later after hurting a foot, but later returned.
Hilo put together a rare run to get back within 45-28, but Brocke Stepteau quelled that with a 3.
Purchase added a triple and the rout was on. The lead grew to as many as 30 points midway through the half.
Hilo (3-4), as a D-II team, was allowed to count the game as an exhibition.
