A 53-year-old visitor from San Francisco was critically injured Thursday when he was biking on Hawaii island in Waimea.
The Hawaii County Fire Department responded to the incident reported at 12:01 p.m., including a medic unit and Chopper 2. The accident occurred on Mana Road, an unpaved gravel road, 3 to 4 miles from the Highway 19 intersection.
The man, who was wearing a safety helmet, suffered a head injury and was conscious when he was found. He had been riding with his spouse when he lost control of the bike and fell onto the roadway. The first unit arrived on the scene at 12:20 p.m. He was taken in critical condition to North Hawaii Community Hospital by Medic 9.
2 children hospitalized after school bus crash
Two children were transported to a hospital Wednesday after a school bus they occupied was struck by a vehicle in Mountain View.
Police responded to the crash shortly after 6:40 a.m. in the area of Highway 11 and North Oshiro Road. A school bus occupied by eight children between the ages of 11 and 14 was traveling on the highway and making a left turn onto North Oshiro Road when it was struck by a state pickup truck traveling south on the highway.
Two children were transported to Hilo Medical Center for minor injuries.
Police said the 52-year-old truck driver also was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
The school bus driver did not sustain any injuries.
