Kauai police removed several coca plants and some hashish from Kalalau Valley today, during a two-day joint operation with other law enforcement agencies.

Fifteen mature coca plants, some as tall as six feet, were recovered, Kauai police said. The coca plant is used to produce the active ingredient in cocaine.

Officers also seized one pound of hash, a concentrated form of marijuana, in the area, police said.

“We are in an ongoing battle against drugs on our island,” Kaua‘i Police Chief Darryl Perry said in a statement. “That’s why this week’s operation is considered a success, and I thank all partnering agencies for their work to help prevent a dangerous and illegal drug from circulating (in) our streets.”

Kauai police worked with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, state Narcotics Enforcement Division, Hawaii National Guard, and Maui Police Department.
