Brown-water advisory issued for all of Maui, parts of Kauai

The state Health Department issued a brown-water advisory for all of Maui this morning due to heavy rain resulting in stormwater runoff entering coastal waters.

Brown-water advisories were also issued for Kealia Beach and Wailua Bay on Kauai this morning, joining an existing one posted for Hanalei Bay yesterday.

Existing advisories remain in effect for Hilo Bay and the northeast coast of Hawaii island and Kakahaia National Wildlife Refuge on Molokai.

“The public is advised to stay out of flood waters and storm water runoff due to possible overflowing cesspools, sewer, manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, pathogens, chemicals and associated flood debris,” said the advisory. “Not all coastal areas may be impacted by runoff. However, if the water is brown, stay out. Continue to practice good personal hygiene and follow up with your primary care physician if you have any health concerns.”

The public can view maps and subscribe to brown-water advisory notices from the department’s clean-water branch at the following link.
