University of Hawaii football player Dejon Allen has accepted an invitation to play in the 2018 East-West Shrine Game in St. Petersburg, Fla., agent Kenny Zuckerman told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser on Tuesday.
Allen, who is 6 feet 3 and 295 pounds, completed his UH eligibility at the end of Saturday’s loss to Brigham Young.
Allen also received an invitation to play in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in the Rose Bowl.
Both all-star games will be played on Jan. 20, 2018.
Zuckerman said Allen chose the East-West Shrine Game, which will be played at Tropicana Field and televised on the NFL Network. The bowl will choose which NFL assistants will be selected as coaches following the conclusion of the league’s regular season next month.
Allen played 50 games during his UH career. He played guard the first two seasons before shifting to left tackle during the 2016 spring training. Although he projects to play guard or center in the NFL, his 34-inch reach also would enable him to continue playing tackle.
Nelson honored
Former Hawaii cornerback Nick Nelson joined linebacker T.J. Edwards and fellow defensive back D’Cota Dixon in representing Wisconsin on the coaches’ All-Big Ten defense first team.
The conference began announcing its postseason awards on Tuesday. Nelson leads the FBS with a school-record 20 passes broken up this season.
Nelson made 89 tackles and had 21 passes defended at Hawaii over the two seasons before transferring to Wisconsin. Nelson earned 2015 Mountain West honorable mention at cornerback.
