High wind whipped up a 5-acre brush fire Sunday in Nanakuli, but firefighters were able to extinguish it without incident, a Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said.
The fire started at about 10:30 a.m. behind the Sack N Save on Farrington Highway and got away from firefighters for a bit, said Honolulu Fire Capt. James Todd.
Firefighters contained the fire by about 12:30 p.m. and extinguished it by about 1:30 p.m.
Man arrested in alleged assault on officer
A 68-year-old man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of attempted murder after police said he tried to run over an officer in Waipahu. The man fled from a minor theft complaint at about 8:50 a.m. Saturday and later tried to run over the on-duty police officer, police said. The officer was not hurt.
Police arrested the suspect at 9:30 a.m. at Farrington Highway and Pupukahi Street.
Fire that destroyed Kalihi home under probe
Firefighters were investigating the cause of an early morning, two-alarm fire that destroyed a home in Kalihi.
About 35 firefighters responded to the fire in the 1770 block of Kuikele Street at about 1:25 a.m. Saturday and found the structure fully involved, said Honolulu Fire Capt. James Todd.
Crews extinguished the blaze at 2:42 a.m. Damage was estimated at $280,000.
