A high-surf warning remains in effect through 10 a.m. today for the north and east shores of the Big Island.

Surf along the north shore is forecast at 20 to 25 feet, while 10- to 15-foot waves are expected along shores with an eastern exposure, the National Weather Service said.

The surf accompanies strong tradewinds and a north swell generated by a low-pressure system in the Northeast Pacific.

The Kohala Mountains and their leeward slopes are also under a gale watch, with possible wind gusts of 50 mph, the weather service said. Lanai could also get strong wind.

A less urgent high-surf advisory is in effect for the north and east shores of Maui, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai and Niihau, the weather service said. That should bring surf of 12 to 16 feet along north shores and 6 to 10 feet on east shores.
