KCC reports mumps case on campus
Kapiolani Community College has notified faculty, students and staff today of one confirmed case of mumps on the Diamond Head campus.
Symptoms are similar to the flu and the disease is spread by coughing, sneezing and touching infected items.
The state Department of Health has recommended individuals in Hawaii to get an extra mumps vaccine due to an outbreak of 575 confirmed mumps cases in the state so far this year.
The health department said the cases involve children and adults, “both vaccinated and unvaccinated.”
In addition to routine mumps vaccines for children and adults, health officials recommend youth and young adults ages 10 to 19 as well as adults born in or after 1957 to get the extra dose, dubbed the “outbreak dose,” now.
Those born before 1957 who do not know whether they had the disease should consult with their healthcare provider about the vaccine.
