While a north swell is subsiding, a high surf advisory is still in effect for north facing shores of Hawaiian isles from Niihau to Hawaii island until 6 p.m. this evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Surf along north-facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii island will be 15 to 20 feet this morning, easing to 10 to 14 feet late this afternoon. The NWS warns of strong breaking waves and strong longshore and rip currents, making swimming difficult and dangerous.

“Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution,” weather officials said in an advisory. “When in doubt, do not go out.”

The NWS also issued a wind advisory for Hawaii island summits, with west winds of 45 to 55 miles per hour and localized gusts near 65 miles per hour until 6 p.m. this evening. These winds will make travel to the summits dangerous. Motorists should use extra caution.

A small craft advisory also remains in effect until 6 p.m. this evening.
