A man who until recently headed the Hawaii Foodbank and previously held executive posts at three different Honolulu television stations is the latest nominee to the Honolulu Police Commission.
Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced Thursday that he has nominated Dick Grimm to replace L&L Drive-Inn co-founder Eddie Flores Jr., whose term was to run out at the end of the year but who chose to resign early. After serving the remained of Flores’ term, Grimm is expected to serve a full, five-year term through Dec. 31, 2022.
The nomination must still be approved by the City Council.
Grimm was president of Hawaii Foodbank from August 2000 until his retirement in January. Before that, he served as one-time general manager, president and sales manager at KGMB, KITV and KHON, respectively.
Grimm has served on the boards of various other local organizations, including the Board of Advisors to the president of Kamehameha Schools, the Central YMCA, the Chaminade Board of Regents and the Easter Seals Society.
He is not the only person with media ties on the seven-member commission. Karen Chang, the chairwoman of digital health company LIVMOR and chairwoman of the board of Hawaii Pacific Health, is the fiancee of Hawaii News Now General Manager Rick Blangiardi.
Commission Chairman Max Sword recently retired as a vice president and lobbyist for hotel chain Outrigger Enterprises while Jerry Gibson is area vice president of Hilton Hotels and Resorts. The other commissioners are retired Hawaii Supreme Court Associate Justice Steven Levinson, private attorney Loretta Sheehan and Tihati Productions CEO Cha Thompson.
Thompson is the only one not to have been appointed or reappointed by Caldwell. She was appointed by former Mayor Peter Carlisle.
