A rubbish fire under the the Nimitz viaduct Wednesday night damaged phone and cable lines, disrupting service to T-Mobile, Spectrum, and Hawaiian Telcom customers this morning.
At 5 p.m. today, Hawaiian Telcom spokeswoman Ann Nishida Fry said technicians have successfully rerouted traffic to restore phone and internet service to all but three customers impacted by the fire. The disruption affected those primarily in the area of Daniel K. Inouye International Airport and west of the airport.
Fry said crews will continue splicing the five 72-pair strands of damaged fiber through the night until all services have been restored.
T-Mobile service was restored thus afternoon after customers reported widespread disruptions on Oahu. Spectrum said an undisclosed number of customers in the lower Kalihi area were affected, but all service was restored by 4:30 p.m.
The fire occurred shortly before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. Fifteen firefighters responded to the blaze and extinguished it just after 11 p.m.
Capt. David Jenkins, spokesman of the Honolulu Fire Department, said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
