Aldo steps in to familiar foe has stepped in to fight Max Holloway at UFC 218.
Jose Aldo, the former longtime kingpin of the 145-pound division, will challenge Holloway for the UFC featherweight title on Saturday, Dec. 2, in a rematch of a fight Holloway won last year, the UFC confirmed Sunday.
Holloway (18-3, 14-3 UFC) unified the 145-pound belt with a third-round TKO of Aldo (26-3, 8-2) last June.
Aldo, who won 15 consecutive fights in the WEC and UFC between 2008 and 2015, has been knocked out in two of his past three bouts.
Aldo has sandwiched a unanimous decision over Frankie Edgar between losses to Conor McGregor and Holloway over the past two years.
Edgar was scheduled to fight Holloway before an injury to his face suffered in training last week forced him to withdraw.
Aldo, who was in the middle of training for a fight against Ricardo Lamas on Dec. 16, was offered to take Edgar’s place.
Holloway has won 11 fights in a row. His TKO win over Aldo was rewarded with a fight of the night bonus for both fighters.
UFC 218 takes place at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit and will be broadcast on pay-per-view.
