Solar Impulse pilot returns for HIFF premiere on historic journey
Andre Borschberg, the Swiss pilot of the Solar Impulse, the solar-powered plane which made a historical journey around the world, with a prolonged stop in Honolulu, returns on Sunday for the premiere of the film, “Point of No Return,” at the Hawaii International Film Festival.
After a historical solo flight from Nagoya, Japan to Honolulu over five days and five nights in July 2015, the Solar Impulse 2 plane ended up staying here for more than nine months due to needed repairs. It took off again in April 2016, piloted by Bertrand Piccard, for a flight to the San Francisco Bay Area, California, and then continued around the globe to Abu Dhabi, where its journey first began.
The entire journey is documented in “Point of No Return” by San Francisco-based filmmakers Quinn Kanaly and Noel Dockstader, which will be screened at 5:15 p.m. Sunday and 2:45 p.m. Thursday at Regal Dole Cannery Stadium. Borschberg will be available for a special behind-the-scenes Q&A on Sunday.
