HAWAII COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT

Mahdi Hemmat, 28, of Puna.

Hawaii island police have released a man who was arrested Sunday on suspicion of shooting a 24-year-old Puna man who lives in the same residence, but continue to investigate the case as second-degree attempted murder.

Police responded Sunday afternoon to a residence on North Road in Mountain View and found a 24-year-old man who had been shot in the head. Police recovered a firearm at the scene where the victim lives.

The man was taken by ambulance to Hilo Medical Center and later flown to Oahu in critical condition, police said.

At 2:45 p.m., police arrested Mahdi Hemmat, 28, who also lives at the residence and later released him.

Anyone who has information about the shooting is asked to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311 or Det. Grant Todd at 961-2381, or contact him at Grant.Todd@hawaiicounty.gov.
