Cebu Pacific drops plan to fly to Honolulu
Philippines-based low-cost carrier Cebu Pacific, which had been planning for the last five years to offer service to Honolulu, has scrapped plans to fly to Hawaii to focus on high-demand domestic and Asian destinations, according to media reports out of the Philippines.
“Before, there were plans. … There’s no active plan,” Cebu Pacific CEO Lance Gokongwei said Tuesday in the Philippines. “We’d rather focus our resources on existing demand for regional and domestic flights.
Gokongwei said flying to the mainland United States is still a possibility.
Philippine Airlines, the only carrier now to fly nonstop between Manila and Honolulu, offers service five days a week. Hawaiian Airlines ceased its four-days-a-week Manila-Honolulu service in 2013.
A&B shareholders approve REIT plan
Shareholders of Alexander & Baldwin Inc. have approved a plan to convert the company to a real estate investment trust, or REIT. A&B on Monday shared the results of a shareholder vote concluded Friday. About 40.4 million votes were in favor. Only 35,497 votes opposed the change.
The company’s board approved the plan in July, and operating as a REIT is anticipated to happen next year.
The change will provide the company tax benefits, require that nearly all profits go to shareholders, position A&B to more easily raise cash for investing, and limit how much business A&B can do outside of generating rental income from real estate it owns.
