Ige rethinks Kakaako park, parking lot reopening
The parking lot at Kakaako Waterfront Park will remain closed, along with the indefinite closure of Waterfront Park, Gov. David Ige’s office announced.
State officials previously said that Kewalo Basin Park, the two Kakaako Gateway parks and the Point Panic area of Kakaako Waterfront Park would open today, three weeks after an estimated 180 homeless people were swept out of the area after allegedly causing an estimated $500,000 in damage to plumbing, power poles and landscaping.
But Ige’s office has scheduled an 11 a.m. press conference at the state Capitol today where he is expected to announce that the Kakaako Waterfront Park parking lot also will remain closed.
“An earlier statement said the parking lot would reopen, but after further discussion, it has been decided to keep the parking lot closed at this time,” Ige’s office said in announcing this morning’s press conference, which will be streamed live through Facebook Live at https://facebook.com/GovernorDavidIge.
