Wahine bounce back, win at UCSB

Junior hitter McKenna Granato put down 21 kills and senior middle Emily Maglio added 13 as Hawaii rebounded from Friday’s disappointing five-set loss at Cal Poly with a 25-20, 25-22, 19-25, 25-17 victory over host UC Santa Barbara in today’s Big West volleyball match in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Senior libero Savanah Kahakai had 24 of the Rainbow Wahine’s 77 digs for her 13th straight match in double digits. Granato added 17 digs for her 10th double-double and had three of the team’s six aces as Hawaii improved to 16-7 overall, 10-2 Big West.

The Gauchos (6-17, 5-5) got 23 kills from sophomore Lindsey Ruddins. It was the fifth straight match with 20-plus kills for the reigning AVCA national player of the week.

UCSB had 14 service aces, six by junior setter Annie Hasselmann, in seeing its three-match winning streak snapped. Sophomore hitter Chloe Allen, who had just one kill against Hawaii earlier this season, finished with 16 in the match that lasted 2 hours and 9 minutes.

The Wahine finish out the home season with 7 p.m. matches on Friday against Cal State Northridge and Saturday against Long Beach State. Saturday’s match is senior night for Maglio, Kahakai, Clare-Marie Anderson, Kalei Greeley, Gianna Guinasso and Kendra Koelsch.
