Sakamoto in final LPGA stage
Hawaii’s Nicole Sakamoto is moving on to the final stage of LPGA Qualifying School after coming in 74th Sunday at Stage II in Florida.
The Kalani graduate, who has been playing the Symetra Tour, will be at LPGA International in Florida for the final stage, Nov. 30-Dec. 3.
Sakamoto ended up at 7-over-par 295 — right on the number for qualifying in a field of 190. The top 80 and ties advanced.
Former Hawaii resident Kyung Kim will also play in the final stage after tying for 55th, at 292. Kim and Sakamoto shot 72 in the final round.
Everyone who finished Stage II earned Symetra Tour playing privileges for 2018. The top 10 on the money list at the end of the Symetra season get LPGA membership.
Kim finished 56th on this year’s money list, with $15,168. Sakamoto was 79th with just under $11,000, and one top 10. Punahou graduate Stephanie Kono struggled with injuries and was 90th, with $9,088 in 10 starts.
Hawaii’s Marissa Chow, Alexandra Kaui, Kacie Komoto, Brittany Fan and Alice Kim failed to advance out of Stage I qualifying in August.
