Hawaii Hilo’s Ashton Jesse hammered 16 kills and hit .480, but it wasn’t enough to defeat Dominican in a PacWest women’s volleyball match on Friday in Hilo. The Vulcans fell to the Penguins 21-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-19.
Hawaii Hilo’s Basia Sauni finished with 50 assists, while Amber Tai posted a double-double with a dozen kills and a dozen digs. The Vulcans (8-10, 5-6 PacWest) were short-handed, with four players out due to injuries, including two of their top three kill leaders.
Dominican’s Catherine Johnson recorded a team-high 14 kills, while Hana Wyles picked up a match-high 19 digs. The Penguins improve to 6-12 overall and 5-5 in PacWest play.
>> The Chaminade women’s volleyball team outlasted Hawaii Pacific 25-23, 25-20, 23-25, 30-28 at McCabe Gym on Friday. Sophomore outside hitter Emma Tecklenburg put down 22 kills and recorded 10 digs for the Silverswords, while freshman Claire Zanon finished with a double-double with 10 kills and a match-high 23 digs. Nina Torio added 17 digs and three aces in the win.
Chaminade (10-9, 5-6 PacWest) tallied eight aces, but also committed 15 service errors. The Silverswords also finished with 20 more kills than the Sharks.
HPU junior right-side hitter Kayla Demari led the team with 11 kills, while junior defensive specialist Kennedy Poligratis scooped up 19 digs. Demari was the only HPU player to finish with double-digit kills. The Sharks fall to 7-12 overall and 5-6 in league play.
