Fire caused an estimated $2.5 million in damage Sunday to the AES Kalaeloa Venture coal-fueled power plant near Barbers Point Harbor in Kapolei.
The initial call came in at about 10:05 a.m. with the caller reporting burning coal or asphalt in the area of 91-550 Malakole St., said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Kevin Mokulehua.
Seven HFD units responded, and about 33 firefighters worked to contain the fire with help from workers at the site. Firefighters used multiple hoses to douse the fire, including from a tower truck with an 85-foot ladder and a basket.
Firefighters extinguished the fire at 12:26 p.m.
HFD determined that the fire originated at the top of the structure, which was loaded with a large amount of coal. The cause is still under investigation.
