Despite taking a second-half lead, the Hawaii soccer team couldn’t close the deal in a 2-1 loss to Cal State Northridge on Sunday afternoon at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, UH (6-8, 1-4 Big West) got a 54th-minute goal from Lillie French, the sophomore’s first career score, on a give from Sonest Furtado. But CSUN (7-4-5, 3-1-1) struck back in the 60th with a header goal by Marissa Favela and got the game-winner in the 69th minute on a counterattack by Cynthia Sanchez.
“I thought we struggled today,” UH coach Michele Nagamine said. “We made some silly mistakes, we didn’t take care of the ball — I’d talked to them about that at halftime — and some of our big-name players just didn’t show up today. We were inconsistent, we were sloppy and no excuses, we absolutely gave that second half to them. We did some really, really ridiculous things.”
The Rainbow Wahine aren’t mathematically eliminated from another Big West tournament, but the odds are long; they likely need to win their last three matches and get some help from around the league to qualify in the top four.
UH hosts Cal Poly (6-9-1, 1-4) for its senior day on Sunday, then plays its final two games on the road.
UH sailors finish fourth in Stoney Burke
The University of Hawaii Rainbow coed sailing team placed fourth and the Rainbow Wahine took ninth in the 29th annual Stoney Burke Intersectional in Clipper Cove off of Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay held Saturday and Sunday.
Due to a lack of wind, a total of just 10 races — five each in the A and B divisions – were completed over the weekend. USC won the title as its coed squad scored 30 points and its women’s team took second with 33. UH’s coed team recorded 48 points and the Rainbow Wahine accumulated 74 points.
