A Big West breakthrough performance by Sonest Furtado carried the Hawaii soccer team to a 2-1 win over UC Santa Barbara at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium on Thursday.
The senior forward’s goals in the 45th and 86th minutes brought the Rainbow Wahine (6-7, 1-3 Big West) back from an early deficit and snapped a six-game conference losing streak going back to 2016. The Waianae High product hadn’t previously scored in a Big West game.
“First Big West goal, and not only one but two,” Furtado said. “I knew that it was coming. We were tied and I was like, we’re not going into overtime. … I give it to my team for working hard and having my back.”
Her winning score came on an assist from Keala Parker-Lee, who blasted the ball upfield and found Furtado in space. Furtado has 13 career goals, including six this season.
“I’m so happy for her,” UH coach Michele Nagamine said. “Good for her. She’s having a great season and has kept a very positive attitude.”
UCSB fell to 4-7-4 and 0-3-1. UH hosts Cal State Northridge (6-4-5, 2-1-1) at 1 p.m. Sunday.
