More than 150 health care and information technology workers are expected to attend the Hawaii Telehealth Summit at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine and Dole Cannery Ballrooms today and Friday.
The state Department of Health and the University of Hawaii are sponsoring the event, which aims to improve access to care through telehealth technology for rural communities and homebound residents.
The DOH said it already uses telehealth for adolescent psychiatric counseling and has piloted teledentistry for West Hawaii residents.
Gov. David Ige, who will speak at the conference, signed a law in July 2016 requiring health payers to reimburse medical providers the same for patient care, whether it is through telehealth or in the office.
